Chris Cornell says he was inspired to write "a hundred different songs" for a collection of music inspired by the acclaimed historical drama 12 Years a Slave.  But the Soundgarden frontman explains in a press release that he settled on the one that would become "Misery Chain" because it conveyed an "extremely important" message he took away from the new film.

Cornell says every generation needs a reminder that "compassion, basic human rights, and love must be our priorities above race, religion, or commerce."  He teamed up with the Civil Wars' singer Joy Williams to record "Misery Chain," which will be featured on the upcoming album Music From and Inspired by 12 Years a Slave.  Other contributors include Gary Clark Jr., Alabama Shakes, Alicia Keys, Cody Chesnutt, and more.  The set will be released digitally on November 5th and physically on November 19th.

Meanwhile, 12 Years a Slave is in select theaters now and will open nationwide this Friday.  The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free black man who is abducted and sold into slavery.
